Bang Pow, the latest indie dance band from San Diego, is striking hard to make an impression on the local club scene with their debut LP “Talk in Technicolor” (released on the San Diego Imprint SUBDVSN). The band’s live performance has always been a beautiful concoction of lights and visual stimulation meant to bring the focus less on the band and more on the crowd, so the challenge for Bang Pow’s first recorded release is to capture that same energy.
Overall “Talk in Technicolor” does a really good job bringing those vibes to life. Though all seven songs (44 minutes) were written & recorded at 120bpm to keep the energy consistent, these San Diego musicians have figured out how to infuse enough creativity and variety in each song to keep it sounding fresh, rather than simply letting it descend into one long muddled high-bpm-mess.
“Kick Rocks” kicks off the album with a light-hearted techno riff and a fun chorus. “Condencention” then goes a bit darker with a heavier guitar riff that melds with the techno beats. Next comes the most easily singable chorus, “Tale Spin.” The final four songs all keep the techno-vibe running in full force, but each with a unique spin. The lead vocals are strong throughout, as are the electronic intros and breakdowns. Lyrically, “Talk in Technicolor” keeps it pretty simple and straight-forward, but is definitely a notch above much of the repeat-the-same-phrase house music that often dominates clubs today.
Bang Pow says their mission is simply to “make people dance” and “create a party wherever we go,” and this debut is a huge step toward accomplishing it. Let the partying begin…
