The High Gallery’s self-titled debut is poised and ready to take the local San Diego music scene by storm. Frontwoman Carissa’s voice comes right out of the gate with a smooth bluesy soulfulness (think Bonnie Raitt meets Fiona Apple) that draws you right in. And with Mark’s simple but catchy guitars and keys laying the foundation, it makes for a beautiful combination.
Lead track “Don’t Get Me Wrong” has an infectious chorus and electric guitar hook that will have you singing along right away. “Flight of the Falcon” then brings a little more funk, and lets Carissa show some attitude (“The world may end tomorrow, but I’m goin’ home alone tonight”), alongside another nasty guitar hook. The longest track on the EP, “Sangre Dulce” (translated “Sweet Blood”) comes next, starting as a slower burn, but building to more passionate vocals from Carissa. It also showcases drummer Charlie’s ability to lay down some thumping percussion to drive the song. “Let’s Get It Together” kicks in next, sounding like a long lost Bonnie Raitt track, complete with the bluesy rock and memorable chorus. The EP closes with “Without A Care,” with the dirtiest guitar yet and more of Carissa’s sweet but soulful vocals shimmering over top.
The High Gallery has already found and fine-tuned their sound, and it’s a sound that’s mature, fun, honest, and passionate, all at the same time. The biggest downside of the trio’s five-track debut EP? There aren’t more songs.
