San Diego California is a town known for its beautiful beaches, awe inspiring cliffs, and it’s picturesque sunsets. However it is also a town that should be known for its burgeoning comedy scene.
So many great talents are birthed in the eclectic and freethinking comedy community. So many overlook this particular artists conclave since we are located just south of Los Angeles and north of the dollar drink night that is Tijuana. Those that are part of it, like myself, have come to love and respect all that it has to offer in the way of personal growth and self therapy.
In the years that I have had the auspicious gift that is the privilege of growing within the womb of San Diego comedy, I feel I am well versed in the knowledge that we all have it intensely good. We get the gift of the possible five to six night a week open mics from downtown San Diego at the immaculate Madhouse Comedy Club atop Horton Plaza to The Go Lounge with all its El Cajon Boulevard glory, and of course the medicinal cloud of inspiration that is Ocean Beach Comedy.
I have had the good fortune to tour not only California, Oregon, and the Midwest I’ve not seen the kind of dedication in ones eyes as I’ve seen in those in my hometown. Being that we are so close to Los Angeles also affords us the chance to develop and still be able to visit the popular kids up north . Sure Los Angeles is said to be the place to go to become “famous”, but San Diego is where you go to be happy. I’ll always fondly recall my first open mic at 0BC (Ocean Beach Comedy) and those there reminding that it’s all about self discovery, the art that is being on stage, and of course free drinks. San Diego comedy will always be my home, even if I’m over five hundred miles away or a continent away in my heart I’ll always be in O.B. making inappropriate jokes in my heart.
In this beautiful Southern California town that I have come to know as my home we have our share of big-name celebrity comedians that come through, and have all commented and one way or another about how lucky we really are. We have even had names like Doug Benson and Bobby Lee come from our ZIP Code. I for one can’t wait to see what is given to the masses in the months and years to come. Everyone from this comedy community will proudly vouche for the fact that this is a family of artists that truly enjoy the craft of making people laugh, sometimes even when they don’t want to.
