No Kings is base out of Sunny San Diego this band is an amalgamation of friends brought together by a shared drive for creative expression, the love of performance, and the value of music for music’s sake.
After leaving Subliminal Trip in 2011, Joel and Garrison continued writing music on their own. They soon enlisted the talents of friends Rafa Scatolin and Matt Cook, and have been writing and recording music together ever since. No Kings Sound is a cultural fusion derived mainly from the rhythms of first and second-wave ska and roots reggae, the exploratory guitar sounds of psychedelic and surf rock, along with traces of punk.
Southern California has many musical tastes and No Kings tries to blend the flavorful culture into a sound all can enjoy. They have had the privilege to share the stage with some amazingly talented musician’s such as Hourlglass Cats, Pasadena, Mike Pinto, Stranger, Sm Familia, 2000 Tons of TNT, Ease up, DPI, Whiskey Avengers and many more…
What does your band name mean?
What a great question! Our band name comes from the 1775 pamphlet Common Sense written by Thomas Paine, it was essential to our own American Revolution, the name itself comes from the passage:
“In the early ages of the world… there were no kings; the consequence of which was there were no wars; it is the pride of kings which throw mankind into confusion.”
How do you write your songs?
I’m glad you asked! We write our songs as a collective hive mind each using our telepathic link to introduce musical elements into the composition, or sometimes we just jam songs until they take shape.
How would you describe your music?
Psychedelic Gregorian Goa Fusion Surf Jazz
Any upcoming releases?
We are finishing up our first full length album “Lowlifes and High Rollers” coming out this Summer
Do you enjoy doing interviews?
This is definitely the best interview I’ve ever been apart of, thank you so much.
